Safety is taken for granted in Greece. The only occasions of petty crime incur in overcrowded places, such as the metro or a concert or specific areas downtown Athens where pickpockets thrive as they do all over the world.

The city centres are served on foot in most of the towns in Greece even in the big cities like Athens, Thessaloniki or Patras. It is always safe to walk and one will be surprised to realize how many people are out at bars and cafes even after midnight. Of course, there are neighbourhoods that are exceptions, but one will be warned at the hotel or by the landlord to avoid.
The criminality indices in Greece are exceptionally low compared to most of the cities abroad. Needless to say, everyone must be careful with their belongings.
